Germany has announced a new program to help Nigeria reduce the estimated $1.5 billion it loses each year to gas flaring. The initiative, revealed by German Ambassador Annett Günther at the Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference in Abuja, aims to convert flared gas into economic value through domestic consumption, industrial use, and hydrogen production. Nigeria flared 5.3 billion cubic meters of gas in 2024, ranking seventh globally in flaring volume. The program is part of the long-standing energy partnership between Germany and Nigeria, covering low-carbon power generation, hydrogen development, natural gas infrastructure, and climate action. Germany also plans to train 6,000 Nigerian energy professionals through a GIZ program in collaboration with Siemens Energy and the European Union. Both countries co-chair the Green Guarantee Group, which identifies financing for green energy investments. The ambassador emphasized that global energy disruptions make diversification important, and the partnership supports Nigeria's goal of reaching net zero by 2060 while Germany targets 2045. Germany's Hydrogen Office in Nigeria will provide technical expertise and policy support for low-carbon hydrogen development.
