Germany has secured EU approval for a 5 billion euro Carbon Contracts for Difference program. This initiative provides financial support to energy intensive industries like steel, chemicals, and cement to help them transition from fossil fuels to low carbon alternatives such as hydrogen and electrification. The program uses a competitive bidding process and a two way contract structure over 15 years. Companies receive payments to cover the price gap between conventional and clean production, but must pay back funds if cleaner technologies become more cost effective than traditional methods.
