A German heat treatment plant upgraded its 20-bar vacuum furnace hot zone using carbon/carbon composite frames and coated graphite heating rods. The retrofit reduced fixture weight by 62%, increased net batch capacity by 35%, and cut single-batch energy use by 22%. Payback was reported at 4.2 months, driven by lower electricity bills and fewer broken bolts. The solution replaced heavy molybdenum and graphite parts with lightweight C/C composite bolts and load plates, which resist creep at 1350 degrees C. CVD SiC/TaC coatings on the heating rods reduced oxidation and extended rod life from 8 to over 26 months. This case shows how material upgrades in industrial heat treatment can deliver both operational and decarbonization benefits.
