GeoRedox and Canada Nickel have signed an MOU to develop a stimulated geologic hydrogen well at the Crawford Nickel Project in Timmins, Ontario. The program aims to extract zero-carbon hydrogen produced by natural chemical reactions within ultramafic rock formations. This partnership is part of a larger vision to create a zero-carbon industrial cluster in Northeast Ontario. If successful, the demonstration could provide a scalable, carbon-free hydrogen supply for the production of critical minerals like nickel, chromium, and cobalt.

The geology sounds right for this, but I want to see the actual flow rates. Extracting hydrogen from rock is one thing, but getting it at a scale that replaces industrial diesel or gas is another. What is the projected yield per well?

Even if the flow rates work, the midstream costs will be the killer. You still need the infrastructure to move that hydrogen to the processing plants. Mining sites are often remote, so the onsite production is the only way this makes financial sense.

Interesting that GeoRedox is funding the demo entirely. From a policy side, the real question is how this hydrogen gets classified for carbon credits. If it is truly zero carbon and naturally occurring, it could be a huge win for industrial emissions accounting.
