GEOMAR and Ocean Networks Canada Survey Basalt Off Canada to Establish CCS Monitoring Baseline
oceannews.comResearchers from GEOMAR, Ocean Networks Canada, and the University of Victoria are mapping basalt formations off the Pacific coast of Canada to create a baseline dataset for future carbon storage monitoring. The SO321-3 expedition, aboard the research vessel SONNE, uses controlled source electromagnetics and seabed stations to measure subsurface electrical resistance before any CO2 injection. The team is surveying the same profile twice to quantify measurement uncertainty, a step needed to detect changes caused by injected CO2 later. Results will feed into plans for a permanent electromagnetic monitoring system. Basalt is of interest for CCS because injected CO2 can mineralize into solid rock relatively quickly, but proving that storage works requires reliable before and after measurements.
