Gen-H Energy and Hycamite Plan 300 MW Low-Carbon Power Plant in Finland Using Methane Pyrolysis
chemanalyst.comGen-H Energy and Hycamite have signed an MoU to study a 200-300 MW low-carbon power plant in Kotka, Finland. The facility would use methane pyrolysis to split natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon. The hydrogen would fuel gas turbines for grid balancing, while the solid carbon could be sold as industrial feedstock instead of being released as CO2. The project is part of a wider plan to turn the old Sunila pulp mill site into a clean energy hub. That plan also includes up to 100 MWp of solar generation near Hietanen harbour. The site has an existing natural gas connection with roughly 145-270 MW of capacity, which could help reduce development costs. Permitting and feasibility studies are still underway, so a final investment decision has not been made. If built, the plant would target long periods of low wind and solar output, a gap that batteries alone struggle to fill.
