Geelong City Council cuts carbon emissions 41% since 2019, saves $900k annually with solar and renewable energy
miragenews.comThe City of Greater Geelong has cut its corporate carbon emissions by 41% since 2019, saving an estimated $900,000 per year through street lighting upgrades, solar installations, and a long-term renewable energy contract. The council also adopted the Geelong Plan for Nature 2026-36, a ten year roadmap to protect biodiversity amid rapid population growth and climate change, and released a draft Urban Forest Strategy to expand tree canopy and urban greening across the region. Additional achievements include planting 50,000 indigenous plants along local waterways, new circular economy initiatives, and ongoing support for the Electric Homes Program. The Urban Forest Strategy will open for community feedback in August 2026, with adoption expected later that year. These actions demonstrate how local government can deliver measurable emissions reductions while building climate resilience.
