The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) completed an onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) pilot on Evergreen Marine's container ship Ever Top. The system captured about 25 metric tons of CO2 during a voyage from Malaysia to China. The captured CO2 was liquefied, transferred ship-to-ship, then trucked to Inner Mongolia where 16 metric tons were used to produce low-carbon calcium carbonate through carbon mineralisation. The EU ETS now allows the verified 25 metric tons of captured CO2 to be deducted from emissions requiring EU Allowance surrender. GCMD's life cycle assessment showed a 7.9% net GHG reduction from a 10.7% gross capture rate. Separately, the IMO gave in-principle support for recognising carbon mineralisation as permanent CO2 storage, based on data from this pilot. This gives captured CO2 a compliance value under both EU and IMO frameworks.
