GCMD OCCS Impact Calculator: Modeling Onboard CO2 Capture and EU ETS Allowance Reductions

GCMD has launched an Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS) Impact Calculator to help shipowners model how much CO2 can be captured, offloaded, and mineralized, and how those volumes might reduce EU Allowance surrender obligations under the EU ETS. The tool draws on learnings from Project CAPTURED and covers the full carbon value chain, from onboard capture and storage through offloading, transport, and downstream mineralisation. Users can adjust variables such as capture rate, onboard storage capacity, operating duration, and downstream losses to estimate the amount of CO2 that ends up mineralised. GCMD says regulatory recognition of onboard captured CO2 could give it compliance value, making the calculator a practical planning tool for owners weighing OCCS investments.
