GCC and CCS+ Initiative Partner to Advance High-Integrity Carbon Capture and Removal Methodologies

The Global Carbon Council (GCC) has signed an MoU with the CCS+ Initiative to develop high-integrity carbon capture, utilization, removal, and storage methodologies. Announced at the IETA Asia Climate Summit 2026 in Hong Kong, the partnership will adapt CCS+ accounting models for use within the GCC's carbon market ecosystem. The collaboration covers direct air capture, CO2 transport, BECCS, and industrial point-source capture, with a focus on hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industry and low-carbon ammonia production. This move aims to standardize complex carbon accounting practices for CCUS and CDR projects, making them more credible for voluntary, compliance, and Article 6 markets. The GCC recently approved a low-carbon ammonia methodology, and these new modules are expected to complement that framework. The partnership signals growing demand for verifiable carbon credits from industrial decarbonization, especially as the IEA highlights CCUS as critical for net-zero pathways.
