A new analysis estimates that the first phase of the conflict in Gaza produced roughly 33.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. That figure covers emissions from military operations, infrastructure destruction, and displaced populations over the initial months. For context, that is comparable to the annual emissions of several small countries combined. The study highlights how armed conflict creates a large and often overlooked carbon footprint. Beyond direct fuel use for vehicles and aircraft, the emissions include concrete production for rebuilding, waste from destroyed buildings, and methane from decomposing materials. The report calls for conflict-related emissions to be included in global carbon accounting frameworks. This number is a reminder that climate policy cannot ignore wartime emissions. If these tons are not counted under any national inventory or carbon market, they become a blind spot in global decarbonization efforts. The findings may push for better tracking and eventual inclusion in climate finance discussions.
