Gatwick Airport Limited is investing £1 million into land restoration projects in Kent and Somerset to remove 10,000 tonnes of CO2e. Partnering with Kent and Somerset Wildlife Trusts, the airport is converting former farmland into floodplain meadows and woodlands to capture carbon and improve biodiversity. These nature-based solutions are designed to offset operational emissions projected for the 2030 to 2039 period. The initiative focuses on enhancing soil quality and local ecosystems while addressing emissions that cannot currently be eliminated through direct operational changes.
