Furrow Tillage rice method in West Bengal cuts carbon emissions 40% and boosts yields 15%
thestatesman.comA two year field study in West Bengal's Nadia district shows that a Furrow Tillage Field system can cut daily soil carbon emissions by roughly 40% compared to conventional deep tillage while raising rice yields to 5.14 tonnes per hectare. That is about 15% higher than no-tillage fields, and nutrient availability stays similar to conventional ploughing. The method leaves the central planting bed undisturbed and keeps narrow water filled furrows on each side, which helps retain soil carbon and supports healthier microbial communities. The research was led by Arnab Majumdar at Imperial College London with partners from IIT Kanpur, Jadavpur University, and others. Results were published in Advanced Science. The team estimates that if 30% of conventionally tilled rice fields across South and Southeast Asia adopted this system, the reduction in agricultural carbon emissions could be substantial. India alone produces over 27% of the world's rice. Longer term studies across different soil types and climates are still needed before wide scale adoption. But the data so far suggests a practical path to lower emissions from rice farming without sacrificing food output. That matters for both carbon accounting and food security in a warming climate.
