Fungal networks move billions of tons of carbon into soil each year, new global map shows

Researchers estimate these fungal networks stretch roughly 68 quadrillion miles in the top six inches of soil and move about 4.4 billion tons of CO2 equivalent into soils each year, roughly 11% of human-related emissions. The map, built from over 16,000 soil cores and machine learning analysis, shows that grasslands hold about 40% of this fungal infrastructure. Croplands have roughly half the network density of wild ecosystems, suggesting intensive farming may be thinning a key part of the soil carbon system. Less than 10% of predicted fungal richness hotspots sit inside protected areas. For carbon project developers and soil carbon credit markets, the findings highlight a measurable biological pathway for carbon transfer underground. The study does not confirm how long that carbon stays locked in soil, but it provides a baseline for monitoring fungal health as part of soil carbon accounting.
