The FUELGAE project is developing a way to turn CO2 from industrial sources into advanced liquid biofuels using microalgae. The process involves cultivating microalgae in photobioreactors integrated into industrial facilities, then converting the biomass into fuels suitable for aviation, maritime, and heavy transport. Demonstration sites include a steel plant in Romania and a bioethanol refinery in Spain. The project also produces biochar and biogas as co-products, and uses a digital twin for real time process optimization. By combining carbon capture with fuel production, FUELGAE aims to provide a scalable alternative for sectors where electrification is not practical. The approach supports EU climate goals and circular carbon use.
