Frontier Climate, a carbon removal purchasing group backed by Stripe, Google, and Shopify, has added Anthropic to its buyers group and pledged $915 million in new financing for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) companies. The total collective commitment now stands at $1.8 billion. Frontier will focus on a narrower set of CDR pathways with gigaton-scale potential, including direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, and biomass removal. The group has already contracted over 1.8 million tons of carbon removals across 53 projects, with $698 million under contract. Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI platform, joins as the group shifts from proving CDR technology works to scaling it affordably and responsibly. Frontier estimates that key pathways could reach $60 to $300 per ton at annual gigaton scale. The move signals growing corporate demand for carbon removal as AI companies face scrutiny over the energy footprint of data centers. Charm Industrial, a Frontier supplier, noted that carbon removal can help offset emissions from AI's enormous power requirements.
