Frontier Climate adds Anthropic to buyers group, pledges $915M for carbon removal | Utility Dive
utilitydive.comFrontier Climate, the carbon removal purchasing group backed by Stripe, Google, Shopify, and others, announced that Anthropic has joined its buyers group. The group also committed an additional $915 million to carbon dioxide removal companies, bringing its total collective commitment to $1.8 billion. Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI platform, joins as Frontier shifts focus to a narrower portfolio of high-conviction removal technologies with gigaton-scale potential. Frontier's portfolio now includes over 1.8 million tons of contracted carbon removals across 53 projects, with $698 million already contracted. The group plans to concentrate on supply-side purchasing while ensuring each deal has a clear path to long-term demand through compliance markets, regulation, or government procurement. Frontier identified surface mineralization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, biomass removal, enhanced rock weathering, and direct air capture as pathways that could reach gigaton scale at $60 to $300 per ton. Charm Industrial, which has contracted 112,003 tons of biomass carbon removal with Frontier for $53 million, welcomed Anthropic's entry. Charm's CFO noted that AI's large power requirements create emissions that carbon removal can help offset, including not just CO2 but also particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from power generation.
