FRIDA v2.1 climate-economy model puts finance, debt, and innovation at the center of global warming projections
bioengineer.orgResearchers published a new integrated assessment model, FRIDA v2.1, in Geoscientific Model Development. It replaces the standard damage function with a detailed simulation of finance, innovation, employment, and government debt. Banks, defaults, exploratory lending, and public budgets all respond to rising temperatures, so the cost of financing investment rises as climate shocks hit. An ensemble run through 2150 shows median output still growing, but slower, with unemployment and government debt climbing. The model also produces a wide uncertainty range, including some parameter sets consistent with historical data where real output falls. Because the model is open source, researchers can test carbon pricing, transition financing, and disorderly transition scenarios with visible mechanics rather than a black-box curve.
