French startup Eenuee's Gen-ee electric plane aims for 90% energy savings with blended-wing body and hydrofoils
futura-sciences.comFrench startup Eenuee is developing the Gen-ee, a fully electric 19-seat regional aircraft designed to use 90% less energy than conventional planes. The design combines a blended-wing body for aerodynamic efficiency, an unpressurized carbon-fiber airframe to cut weight, and electric motors operating at 90% efficiency. The aircraft also features retractable hydrofoils for water takeoffs and landings, targeting routes in Scandinavia, Canada, and Asia where waterways replace runways. Eenuee projects a range of 310 miles and aims for commercial service around 2032, with 50 to 100 aircraft delivered by 2035. The unpressurized cabin limits altitude but reduces structural weight by 40%. The company is currently testing scaled demonstrators and plans to begin certification with European authorities in 2027. While battery energy density remains a challenge, the design focuses on aerodynamic and weight improvements rather than waiting for battery breakthroughs.
