A French court has ordered TotalEnergies to disclose the indirect emissions from customer use of its oil and gas products, known as Scope 3 emissions. The ruling stops short of requiring the company to reduce those emissions or change its fuel sales. This marks a step toward mandatory carbon transparency for major fossil fuel firms in Europe. Measuring Scope 3 emissions is technically complex. TotalEnergies will need to estimate emissions from millions of vehicles and homes using consumption patterns and standardized factors. The court did not set a timeline for reporting or impose penalties for noncompliance. Critics say the order adds transparency without forcing real decarbonization action.
