Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines first cruise line to earn Silver Carbon Literate status for staff training and food waste tech
ipswichstar.co.ukFred. Olsen Cruise Lines has become the first cruise company to earn Silver Carbon Literate Organisation status from The Carbon Literacy Project. The award recognizes the company's work training 88 employees across 17 departments, covering 40 percent of its workforce, on carbon awareness and practical emissions reduction. The training has led to real changes like digitizing shipboard services and using AI-powered food waste monitoring on the vessel Bolette. The company first achieved Bronze accreditation in November 2025 and moved to Silver by June 2026. The Carbon Literacy Project's CLO Awards highlight organizations that embed carbon knowledge into daily operations. For the cruise industry, which faces growing pressure to cut emissions, this shows a path that relies on staff education and operational tweaks rather than just new hardware. The next question is whether the training translates into measurable per-passenger emissions reductions over time.
