Fraunhofer membrane reactor turns lime plant CO2 into methane, hydrogen, and carbon black
european-coatings.comResearchers at Fraunhofer IKTS have developed a membrane reactor that captures CO2 from lime production and converts it into methane, hydrogen, and elemental carbon. The process uses green hydrogen to methanate captured CO2, then pyrolyzes the methane to recover hydrogen for reuse and produce carbon black for industry or agriculture. A sealed electric furnace collects the CO2 directly during calcination, avoiding dilution with flue gas. The project, called Green Lime, has been validated with partners HySON and Johann Bergmann. The next step is scaling to industrial size with commercial partners. The technology could also apply to cement plants and waste management facilities where process CO2 emissions are hard to avoid. Funding came from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.
