Fraunhofer IMM's 25 kW Diesel Reformer for Maritime Fuel Cells Heads to Hamburg Demo
hydrogenfuelnews.comFraunhofer IMM has developed a 25 kW diesel reformer for maritime fuel cells under the ZIM-funded DIMARIT project. The system converts onboard diesel into hydrogen-rich gas to feed a fuel cell for auxiliary power on ships, where space for hydrogen storage is limited. A public demonstration is planned at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo in Hamburg later this year. Because it uses existing diesel fuel infrastructure, the reformer could simplify retrofits on ships that want to add fuel cells without changing fuel logistics. The tradeoff is that diesel remains the energy input, so the emissions benefit depends on fuel type and efficiency. Fraunhofer IMM describes the unit as a demonstration-ready prototype rather than a commercial product. This is a niche but relevant step for maritime decarbonization, where auxiliary engines are a significant source of local pollution. The Hamburg demo will show whether the reformer handles real-world load transients and marine fuel quality. For now, the technology is worth tracking, not betting on.
