France has released a comprehensive strategy to eliminate its dependence on coal, oil, and fossil gas by 2050. The plan sets interim targets to reduce fossil fuel consumption to 40 percent by 2030 and 30 percent by 2035, with a total coal phaseout expected by 2030. To achieve these goals, the roadmap focuses on massive electrification, the deployment of new EPR2 nuclear reactors, and a significant scale-up of offshore wind and solar capacity. The strategy also includes a ban on gas boilers in new buildings starting in 2027 and a push for one million heat pump installations annually by 2030.
