New data reveals that France's tourism industry generated 75 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2023. Transport accounts for two thirds of this footprint, with nearly half of the emissions occurring outside French borders due to international travel and imported goods. To combat this, France is implementing policies to restrict short-haul domestic flights and investing in high-speed rail. However, the economic dependence on tourism creates a tension between growth goals and the national target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
