South Africa is securing critical international funding to drive its decarbonization efforts. Recent agreements include a 300 million euro loan from the French Development Agency for Transnet to lower emissions in rail and port operations, and a 200 million euro concessional loan from Germany to expand renewable energy capacity. These funds are essential as the country faces domestic budget constraints. While private investment in wind and solar remains strong, international climate finance is increasingly needed to fund the expansion of the transmission grid and operationalize the Climate Change Act.
