FPSO SOFC power system clears ABS qualification, MODEC and Eld Energy target offshore pilot
offshore-mag.comMODEC and Eld Energy have passed the Technology Feasibility and Concept Verification stage under ABS's New Technology Qualification process for their solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power system designed for FPSOs. The system uses produced gas and hydrogen-rich gas from carbon capture to generate electricity electrochemically, avoiding combustion and potentially reaching up to 70% efficiency, compared to conventional offshore gas turbines which typically operate at lower levels. The milestone confirms safety and regulatory compliance, moving the technology closer to an offshore pilot installation. The partners plan to test a 40-kW pilot skid on an operating FPSO to monitor real-world performance, which will inform scaling to a 120-kW module integrated with carbon capture, and eventually a multi-MW class solution. They have also completed HAZID, HAZOP, and FMEA risk assessments alongside the ABS review. This qualification is a concrete step toward reducing FPSO emissions while maximizing use of produced gas, though the pilot results will be critical to validate the claimed efficiency and reliability under offshore conditions.
