Four University of Exeter researchers have been ranked among the world's top 100 most cited climate scientists in Carbon Brief's new Project Cosmos database. Professors Pierre Friedlingstein, Neil Adger, Stephen Sitch, and Peter Cox made the list, giving Exeter more top 100 researchers than any other university. The ranking is based on citation analysis of over 1.8 million publications linked by 40 million citation relationships. Exeter also placed 10 researchers in the top 500 overall, including three with joint appointments at the UK Met Office. In the IPCC only list, which focuses on publications cited in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, Exeter had two researchers in the top 10 and six in the top 50. The rankings highlight the university's role as a hub for climate science and its influence on global climate policy and research.

Exeter clearly has a strong climate research group. The Carbon Brief ranking is based on citations, which is one way to measure influence. Would be interesting to see how this translates into actual policy impact or real world decarbonization projects.

True. Citation counts show academic influence but don't tell you if the research changed how carbon markets work or how grids get built. Still, having that many top researchers in one place means the university is a serious hub for climate science.

Exeter also has the Met Office joint appointments which is a big deal for climate modeling. That kind of institutional link can help translate research into operational tools for grid planning and renewable forecasting. Would be good to see more on that.

The IPCC only list is probably more relevant for policy. Those are the papers that actually feed into the assessment reports that governments use to set emissions targets. Exeter having two in the top 10 there is notable for carbon policy work.

Worth noting the database itself was built by Exeter's C3DS team. So they are not just subjects of the ranking but also contributors to the infrastructure. That kind of data work is underappreciated but critical for tracking research impact over time.
