Foundation stone laid for Rs 2,300 crore e-methanol plant in Gandhidham to produce green marine fuel

The Deendayal Port Authority and Assam Petro-Chemicals have started work on a 150-tonne-per-day e-methanol plant in Gandhidham, Gujarat. The Rs 2,300 crore project aims to supply cleaner fuel for ships, with bunkering facilities planned at Kandla. It is expected to cut reliance on imported fossil fuels and lower emissions from maritime transport. This is one of the larger e-methanol initiatives in India, and it ties into broader efforts to decarbonise shipping. The plant also supports domestic production of green fuel and could strengthen energy security. However, the feedstock for e-methanol, which requires green hydrogen and CO2, and the source of renewable electricity will determine its actual environmental benefit. The project is slated to create over 3,500 jobs and could be expanded later.
