Fortescue has signed an agreement with CMB.TECH to charter up to 12 ammonia-capable bulk carriers, including three dual-fuel ammonia vessels expected by end of 2026. The fleet could cut CO2 emissions by 250,000 tonnes per year if fueled with green ammonia. This move supports Fortescue's strategy to build demand for green hydrogen and ammonia in hard-to-abate shipping. The vessels are Newcastlemax dry bulk carriers with 210,000 DWT capacity. Nine will be built ammonia-ready for future conversion. The deal signals growing commercial demand for ammonia-fueled ships, potentially accelerating investment in bunkering infrastructure and fuel supply chains. The International Maritime Organization targets net-zero shipping emissions by around 2050.

Fortescue has its own green hydrogen projects in Australia. They are betting on making their own fuel. Still a long way from commercial volumes though.

IMO net zero by 2050 is the driver. But without carbon pricing or fuel standards, ammonia demand signals like this are fragile. Policy needs to lock in the incentive.
