Fortescue and CMB.TECH have signed an agreement for up to 12 ammonia-capable Newcastlemax bulkers, each 210,000 dwt. Three will have dual-fuel ammonia engines and enter service by end of 2026; the other nine are ammonia-ready and can be converted later. If fueled by green ammonia, the fleet could cut CO2 emissions by around 250,000 tonnes per year compared to conventional marine fuels. The deal builds on Fortescue's Green Pioneer demonstration vessel, which showed ammonia can be used safely at sea. The next step is scaling green ammonia supply. Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, said the agreement sends a signal that shipping can decarbonize at scale with committed partners. The project is a practical move toward zero-emission shipping, though it depends on green ammonia availability and bunkering infrastructure.
