Formula One reported a 35% reduction in its carbon footprint in 2025 compared to its 2018 baseline, according to its latest annual review. The organization also saw a 12% drop from 2024 levels. Travel emissions fell 27% since 2018, helped by teams using sustainable aviation fuel and remote broadcast operations. Almost 80,000 tonnes of CO2 have been removed from F1 operations since 2018. F1 aims to become net-zero carbon by 2030. More than 50% of its broadcast and freight will shift from air to ground transport by that date. The sport will hold 22 Grands Prix this year and continues to work on calendar rationalization and alternative energy solutions to cut emissions further.

35% drop since 2018 is decent. The 12% year on year shows momentum is still there. Curious how much of that is sustainable aviation fuel vs just flying less.

The 27% cut in travel emissions is the real story. Remote broadcasting alone probably accounts for a big chunk. But 80k tonnes removed is tiny compared to overall sport emissions. Need to see the full scope.

80k tonnes is about 0.01% of global transport emissions. Symbolic but not material. Still, if F1 can show the model works, it might push other mega events to follow. That's where the leverage is.

Calendar rationalization is the low hanging fruit they keep mentioning. If they actually consolidate races regionally, that could cut more than fuel swaps. But the money in scattered locations fights that.
