Forest soils in Ondo State, southwest Nigeria, carry more organic carbon and hold nutrients better than farmland, according to a new field study. Researchers sampled 60 composite soil profiles across five land uses, including forest, oil palm, farmland, watershed, and residential areas, then mapped the results with GIS. Farmland had the lowest organic matter and the most acidic conditions, while oil palm plantations showed the strongest acidification.
