Ford claims its Ranger PHEV can replace a portable gas generator on job sites, cutting emissions and fuel use significantly. In tests at Ford's Dunton engineering center, the truck's Pro Power Onboard system produced 6.9 kW of power while emitting far less nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide than a typical 4 kW generator. Ford says nitrogen oxide emissions from the generator were over 9,000 times higher in some scenarios, and carbon monoxide was more than 1,200 times higher. Fuel consumption dropped to about one third once the truck warmed up and used its battery as a buffer. The Ranger PHEV is currently sold in Europe, the UK, and Australia, with no US plans announced. Independent testing would help confirm Ford's claims, but the data suggests that replacing a gas generator with a PHEV could cut both emissions and fuel costs on job sites.
