Food Waste Emissions Are Five Times Higher Than Aviation, UNEP Says
channelafrica.co.zaFood waste is a bigger climate problem than most people realize. The UN Environment Programme says rotting food generates up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, about five times the emissions from aviation. Most of that impact comes from methane released when food decomposes in landfills, a gas that traps far more heat than CO2 over the short term. Households are the biggest source, accounting for roughly 60% of the 1 billion meals discarded daily. The land used to grow wasted food covers about 1.4 billion hectares, or 28% of the world's agricultural land, which means food waste also drives deforestation and squanders water and energy. The article highlights practical responses in Africa, including composting, waste picker integration, and black soldier fly facilities in Malawi and Uganda. Progress has been slow, though. The FAO says food loss has barely improved since 2015, leaving the 2030 goal of halving waste per person far off.
