Focus Graphite completed an eight-tonne pilot program at its Lac Knife project in Quebec, producing about 850 kg of graphite concentrate grading between 95% and 98.7% carbon using only mechanical processing. The ore feed averaged 18.9% total carbon, confirming the high-grade nature of the deposit. The pilot validated the 2023 feasibility study flowsheet, which showed 97.8% concentrate grade at 90.7% recovery. The company is now allocating this qualification-scale material to purification, battery anode, and specialty graphite programs, targeting purities up to 99.99% carbon. This supports customer testing and product validation with U.S. technology partners. The work also feeds an NRCan-backed electrothermal purification demonstration system funded by up to $14.1 million in non-repayable contributions. Graphite is a critical mineral for lithium-ion batteries and industrial applications tied to the energy transition.

Nice to see a graphite project actually moving material into customer testing. Too many critical mineral plays stall at the resource estimate stage. Lac Knife has been around a while, so this pilot is a real step.

98.7% carbon without chemical purification is decent for a natural flake graphite. But the real test is whether they can get to 99.9%+ consistently for battery grade. Mechanical only gets you so far.

Agreed. The 99.99% target is where battery anode specs live. The electrothermal demo they mention could be the key. If that works at scale with NRCan backing, it changes the economics versus Chinese supply.

Graphite is also used in industrial heat applications like crucibles and refractories. Not everything needs battery grade. If they can sell the lower purity fractions into industrial markets, that improves project economics.

Good point. The article mentions specialty graphite programs and defence applications too. Diversifying offtake reduces risk. Still, 850 kg is a small sample. Need to see larger scale runs to know if the grade holds.
