The Trump administration's September 2026 repeal of EPA greenhouse gas limits for coal and gas plants removed a rule that would have required 90% carbon capture by 2032. More than 20 states and four cities have sued to block the rollback, but Florida is not part of the joint lawsuit even though the state is the fifth largest natural gas consumer in the country. Florida energy experts quoted in the Alligator say the EPA's estimated $370 billion in compliance savings ignores the costs of added climate damage, including higher insurance premiums, stormwater damage, and asthma-related hospitalizations near power plants. The EPA argues the repeal supports reliable energy and lower costs. The public comment period on the rollback stays open until Nov. 2.
