The Flamingo Blue Carbon Urban Complex, a proposed conservation project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, will be a key focus of Mumbai Climate Week 2027. The project aims to protect wetlands, mangroves, and flamingo habitats while promoting blue carbon credits, climate finance, and sustainable tourism. Organizers say it could serve as a global model for combining biodiversity conservation with climate action. The proposal, submitted to India's Prime Minister's Office, has been forwarded to the Maharashtra State Wetland Authority for review. Supporters include the Bombay Natural History Society, which will run workshops to develop a practical climate action framework. Participants at a recent preparatory workshop also called for long-delayed notification of Maharashtra's wetlands under national conservation rules, despite over 23,000 wetlands already mapped by ISRO. The complex highlights the economic value of wetlands for flood protection, shoreline stability, and carbon storage. With Mumbai Climate Week set for February 2027, the project could attract climate finance and position India's coastal ecosystems as a serious piece of the global carbon puzzle.
