First Wind Farm in Tibet's Ngari Prefecture Reaches Grid Connection Phase, 50 MW Project at High Altitude
globaltimes.cnThe first wind farm in Tibet's Ngari Prefecture has completed turbine installation and moved into grid-connection commissioning. The 50 MW project in Gaize County sits at 4,600 to 4,800 meters above sea level and uses ten turbines rated at 5 MW each. Operator CGN worked around thin air, sub-zero temperatures, hail, and strong winds by monitoring conditions in real time to find safe installation windows. Once fully online, the project is expected to generate about 180 million kWh per year and offset roughly 150,000 tons of carbon dioxide, according to CCTV. That would make it a meaningful local clean energy source in a remote region that has limited grid infrastructure. Commissioning work at the booster station is now underway, with more than 60 workers staying on site through the National Day holiday to keep the schedule moving. For anyone tracking high-altitude renewables, this is a useful example of how cold-weather logistics and commissioning timelines can shape project delivery in extreme environments.
