Arnhem Land Fire Abatement NT (ALFA NT) has signed a major deal with National Australia Bank for the purchase of 150,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) from Indigenous savanna burning projects. The agreement gives NAB access to credits until 2031, reducing its reliance on spot market purchases. The credits come from five fire management projects in Arnhem Land where Traditional Owners and rangers use early dry season burning to prevent larger, high-emission wildfires later in the year. Revenue from the ACCU sales funds over 300 Indigenous ranger positions and community programs. The deal follows federal reforms to the Safeguard Mechanism and new savanna fire methodologies introduced in April 2026. ALFA NT says every dollar from credit sales goes back into land management and cultural work. This is a concrete example of long-term corporate demand for high-integrity carbon credits tied to Indigenous land management.
