Filipina engineer develops low-carbon hollow blocks from natural resins and agricultural waste
bworldonline.comA Filipina engineer has created Po-Lite Hollow Blocks, a sustainable alternative to concrete that uses natural resins and geomaterials instead of cement. Cement production accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions, and the construction industry contributes over 10%. The blocks are 64% lighter than concrete, five times stronger under pressure, and cure in three days instead of 28. The blocks can be customized in size, color, and texture, eliminating the need for plastering and painting. This cuts construction time by up to 60%. The product has been used in 10 projects since 2017 and is targeting government mass housing in Luzon. Adoption of green building materials in the Philippines remains slow despite the Green Building Code. For post-disaster rebuilding and typhoon-prone areas, the strength and speed of these blocks offer a practical alternative. The main barrier is market uptake, which the founder hopes government projects can lead.
