Fiji Minister Tabuya calls for simpler blue carbon finance access for Pacific islands
islandsbusiness.comFiji's environment minister Lynda Tabuya used a Bangkok climate forum to push for easier access to blue carbon finance for Small Island Developing States. She argued that current financing mechanisms are too complex and don't fit the realities of Pacific island nations. Tabuya also noted that Fiji is building a national carbon market framework to support high-integrity blue carbon projects and exploring blended finance that mixes public, private, and climate money to scale up coastal restoration. Fiji has committed to managing 100 percent of its ocean and protecting at least 30 percent by 2030 under its National Ocean Policy and Climate Change Act. The country is also working on a carbon market framework to back blue carbon projects with integrity standards. The key question is whether the promised financing will actually reach local communities and whether the carbon credits from these projects will hold up under scrutiny.
