Fiji launches $5.2M carbon market plan to enable first international carbon trade by 2030
fbcnews.com.fjFiji has launched a five-year, $5.2 million plan to prepare for international carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The plan, introduced during the Pacific Pre-COP31 in Nadi, targets energy, transport, agriculture, waste, and forestry, with strong emphasis on forests, mangroves, and wetlands. It also includes plans for a national transactional registry and an inter-agency technical working group to oversee carbon market activities. Community benefit-sharing, social and environmental safeguards, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent are central to the framework. The government says the plan will help attract high-integrity carbon finance while ensuring revenue reaches local landowners and resource owners. Conservation International has signaled support, but the practical test will be whether Fiji can build credible measurement, reporting, and verification systems before its first trade in 2030.
