Fiji develops first low-carbon maritime transport roadmap to cut shipping emissions and build climate resilience

Fiji is moving forward with plans to decarbonize its maritime sector. A stakeholder workshop in Suva kicked off work on the country's first comprehensive low-carbon maritime transport roadmap. The initiative, which also involves Tonga and Vanuatu, aims to cut emissions from shipping while making the sector more resilient and efficient. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the goal is a modern, accessible maritime system that serves every Fijian, not just emissions reductions on paper. The roadmap will include monitoring, reporting, and verification systems to track emissions and guide policy. The Republic of Korea is backing the regional effort, highlighting the need for international cooperation. For a Pacific island nation heavily dependent on shipping, this is a practical step toward aligning transport infrastructure with climate goals. The real test will be whether the roadmap leads to concrete investments in cleaner vessels and port upgrades.
