Fiji Airways is looking into developing local carbon projects to meet its obligations under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Instead of buying credits from overseas markets, the airline wants to keep the economic and environmental benefits within Fiji. The airline hosted an IATA-led Carbon Market Training at its Aviation Academy to build local capability across regulators and industry. The initiative is part of Fiji Airways' Maroroya Sustainability Strategy. The Deputy Conservator of Forests noted that Fiji already has high-integrity emission reduction units through the National Emission Reduction Programme. A carbon trading partnership could allow the forestry sector to directly support aviation's net zero goals while promoting sustainable forest management. Participants will work with government ministries to develop CORSIA-eligible projects in Fiji.
