East Suffolk Council will begin replacing promenade lighting along Felixstowe seafront in January, with completion expected by spring. The project swaps out ageing columns, lanterns and festoon lighting, and adds lighting inside four historic seafront shelters. Council officials say the upgrade will reduce carbon emissions while making the seafront more welcoming at night and supporting a year-round evening economy. The work is a short-term priority in the Felixstowe Seafront Development Strategy, adopted in October. Alongside the lighting, the council approved new wayfinding signs and changes to the route between the promenade and Manor Terrace. Longer-term proposals include a trial to part-pedestrianise Sea Road, a resident parking scheme, and a shuttle bus linking the town centre, seafront and Landguard Fort. Local government lighting retrofits are a straightforward energy efficiency win, but the actual carbon savings depend on the fixture types, controls, and grid emissions. Residents interested in the project may want to ask the council for expected energy and cost reductions before work begins.
