Fayetteville's Public Works Commission is upgrading its water treatment plants to combat PFAS and GenX contamination. The utility is moving toward a granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration system, which testing identified as the most effective method for removing these synthetic chemicals from the local water supply. While current reports indicate the water meets federal safety standards, the full GAC infrastructure project is a major investment. The system is expected to be fully operational across all treatment plants by the fall of 2029.
