This is why industrial heat needs a total overhaul. Old kilns are death traps and carbon bombs. We need to move toward electrified heating or hydrogen if we want to stop these kinds of accidents and hit emissions targets.
The tech exists, but the incentives are wrong. Until the cost of a safety failure or a carbon tax outweighs the cost of a full retrofit, these plants will just keep patching old equipment.
Electrifying these kilns sounds great in a slide deck, but look at the load. A full scale lime plant would crush a local rural grid in Shanxi without massive transmission upgrades first.
