Fast16 Malware: Pre-Stuxnet Sabotage of Nuclear Weapons Simulations

Researchers have analyzed the Fast16 malware, a sophisticated tool designed to corrupt nuclear weapons testing simulations. Predating Stuxnet, this malware targeted specific engineering software to tamper with uranium compression data, ensuring that simulation results were subtly altered without alerting the operators. The operation demonstrated a high level of domain expertise in nuclear physics and software engineering. By targeting the mathematical calculations within LS-DYNA and AUTODYN, the attackers could sabotage research and development efforts by providing false data during critical detonation simulations.
