Fashion Giants Could Cut Bangladesh's Carbon Emissions by 8.59 Million Tonnes by 2040: Analysis
downtoearth.org.inNew analysis from Stand.earth shows that 15 major fashion brands, including H&M and Inditex, have the buying power to drive a clean energy transition in Bangladesh's garment sector. The report finds these companies account for 26.3% of the country's apparel exports by weight. If they finance renewable energy and electrification, the sector could avoid 8.59 million tonnes of CO2 by 2040, equal to annual emissions from over three million North American homes. Currently, renewables provide less than 5% of Bangladesh's grid electricity. The report calls on brands to provide debt-free financing, support worker heat protection, and publicly report progress. Only two of the 15 companies have 100% renewable electricity targets for their supply chains. The findings also carry lessons for India's textile clusters, which face similar pressure to decarbonize.
